About Mary

Mary was born in Pasadena, California to a family of eleven children. She remembers always keeping busy doing art and craft projects - be it macramé, sewing, beadwork, painting, drawing cartoon characters or sci-fi landscapes. At times art supplies were limited. So she learned how to make art and toys from every day items that were destined for the trash.

mary theisShe left home at age 19 to explore the world outside of Los Angeles. Her first job away from home was working on a trail crew in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. It was in the dramatic setting of the John Muir Wilderness that she found her love of nature and the strong desire to capture its beauty.

While in the Eastern Sierras, Mary helped start a pottery business, took watercolor classes from artist, Peggy Gray, and delved into painting landscapes. Wanting to expand her skills, she received a BA in Art and a minor in computers from Humboldt State University in 1986. While in college she explored painting in oils and cold wax media.

She returned to Southern California after college to gain experience as a computer programmer but always kept one hand in her art. Mary participated in various group and solo shows in Southern California. She and her husband produced ‘Art and Environment Days’ at their home where local artists and sustainability advocates shared their passions with the public.

From 2006-2008 she was an active board member and President of ArtNow, which produced many community hands-on art projects such as the wildly successful Trashion Show at North Mountain Park’s Earth Day Celebration in Ashland, Oregon, and the ArtCars in Ashland’s 4th of July Parade.

Mary is currently living in Ashland, Oregon where she is focusing on her art and sharing it with the world. She is interested in incorporating mythical and spiritual subjects in her artwork. She has a lot of great ideas and can’t wait to share them with everyone.
